Research peptides: definition and documentation
Understand what a peptide is and distinguish chemical identity, specifications and the analytical results associated with a particular batch.
What is a peptide?
IUPAC defines peptides by their chemical structure: units derived from amino acids are connected by amide bonds. The term describes a family of compounds, not a single product or an intended application.
A search for “peptides” can cover very different subjects. Here, we discuss reagents and documentation for laboratory work. A molecule name or field of study alone does not characterize a supplier’s material.
Four different kinds of product information
- Chemical identity: which compound and form does the reference describe?
- Presentation: what nominal amount and packaging are advertised?
- Specification: which criteria are presented as expected limits?
- Batch result: what analysis was actually performed on the identified sample?
These distinctions help prevent an advertised amount being mistaken for an analytical result, or a purity limit for a measurement. NIST compares different peptide quantification methods: the method and measured quantity should accompany the reported number.
